Hatch Report: PMDs and Caddis, and Tricos aplenty’
Mighty Mo’ Report
The water is holding steady. Still pretty high but nothing like we saw in June. The fish are plentiful and happy. Best of all, everything is starting to hatch. You’ve got tricos, PMDs and Caddis all making an appearance on the Mo. On Friday, I was fishing with a trico nymph — looked like a zebra midge but had some wings on it. (It’s in our shop, just ask for it.) It was one after another. Couldn’t keep the trout off that nymph. That was about noon. In the morning, PMDs were coming off the water and the ole frenchie did the trick. I’ve had some great success with fishing the evening Caddis hatch between 8P and 9P. This week, the caddis hatch was like a blizzard in July. It’s just an awesome time to be on the Missouri. For a more detailed report, keep reading below.
Nymphs: Frenchie, Pedersons Sow, Green Machine, Nose Picker PMD, Crystal Bender PMD, Psycho May PMD
***The name of the game for nymphing is you have to find the bottom. Go about 6 feet from indicator to split shot. Be sure to adjust throughout the day until you find your zone. Fishing the flats/ shallower banks with a short leash is a viable option as well.
Dry Flies: Hi-vis Rusty Spinner, Hi-vis PMD Spinner, D&D Cripple PMD, Film Critic PMD, Last Chance Cripple PMD, Sprout Emerger PMD, Tiltwing Dunn PMD, Corn Fed Caddis, Stocking Wing Caddis
*** Look for rising fish and park above them if you can find them. Reach cast and feed your dry flies down to them. Work on that reach cast! It’s gotta be perfect on the Mo’ and you’ve got a tight window to drift that fly down to the perfect spot. Get out in the morning and look for the PMD hatch around 10 am. Caddis are more in the evening.
Streamers: Kreelex, Sparkle Minnow, Sparkle Yummy, Skiddish Smolt, Doc’s Articulator, Lil Kim, Polar Minnow
*** Streamer fishing with intermediate to full sink lines is viable but there must be cloud cover. Start off with white water and work your way through different colors and vary your retrieve.
